Equinor Project: What will it take to trust the machines?

The project initiated by Equinor is facilitated through The Innovation Effect's learning and innovation program. In this program, the students who participate are given the mandate to challenge the company and present innovative ideas. The goal of the program is to stimulate learning and co-creation between young creative minds and innovative companies. The project is paid, part-time with flexible workhours and is compatible with full-time studies and other part-time jobs.
About the project:
Equinor has a long history of using automation and information systems to increase productivity and improve decision making. But in safety critical systems, for instance when sitting on top of an explosive mix of hydrocarbons in the cold winter seas, trusting the machines literally becomes a matter of life and death.
Now, Equinor is looking for an interdisciplinary student team to help explore the opportunities and challenges in human-machine interaction. The main objective of the project is to gain a broader understanding of what it will take to trust the machines in safety critical operations in the oil and gas industry. The project is divided into three phases:
1. Preparatory research (8 weeks): What is the current literature and best practices on building trust in machines in safety critical industries? Identify 1-3 candidate scenarios and develop interview guides.
2. Case studies (8 weeks): Qualitative interviews with managers, operators and stakeholders to understand what it will take to create trust. Analyze common areas where trust is crucial. Identify 3-5 concepts for increasing trust.
3. Concept studies (8-10 weeks): Develop sketches and mock-ups of the concepts identified in phase 2. End user testing.
With guidance and mentoring from TIE, the student team will be responsible for project management and planning, completing the tasks and activities in each phase, and the delivery of a final report to the company. The team will also participate in meetings and co-creation workshops with Equinor and prepare presentations for the meetings.
We seek master students or recent graduates with competence within:
- Computer Science: Machine learning / Artificial intelligence / Robotics
- Engineering: Process control / Chemical engineering / Automation engineering / Robotics
- Psychology / Social anthropology / cognitive sciences
- User experience / Interaction design
- Business analytics / Methodology and analysis
